Back in 1885-86 when the first Gasoline powered automobile graced the road, it was a marvel. 135 years down the line, it is fair to say, the Automobile industry has come a long way with an ensemble of innovations that enhances the way we drive.
Here are a few of the most pivotal inventions that completely transformed modern day driving –
An invention that has saved countless lives on the road, the 3-point seat belt was first introduced by Nils Bohlin in 1959 while he was an engineer at Volvo in Sweden. Volvo Cars then decided that the innovation was so significant, it had more value as a life-saving tool that they decided to give the patent away for free to other car manufacturers than make a profit out of it.
The seatbelt has since reduced chances of injury or in extreme cases – death by at least 50% and remains as one of the most significant innovations in the history of motoring.
Emergency Braking System –
Volvo Cars, once again, were the pioneers of revolutionary innovation in the Automobile industry with their Emergency Braking System now famously known as City Safety. Slightly more than a decade ago, an infrared camera was used to detect an obstacle in the vehicles path that would force the car to brake on its own at speeds below 30 Km/h.
Since its initial arrival, the technology has only got better with not just light commercial vehicles but also heavy commercial vehicles which are now capable of stopping almost instantly at speeds about 120 km/h.
The video below is further proof of how far technological advancements have come to not just changing lives but more importantly saving them too.
Adaptive Cruise Control –
We are well aware the cruise control helps a vehicle maintain a steady speed while driving. Adaptive Cruise Control however adds on by altering the speed of a vehicle based on traffic conditions ahead of it. By using long-range radars and cameras generally positioned at the front-end of the vehicle, a car can automatically decide the next step to take without human intervention.
Turbocharged Engines –
In the most basic sense, Turbocharged Engines give a vehicle an added boost in performance. From extra horsepower to better fuel efficiency to leaving less impact on the environment, Turbocharged Engines are being installed in more vehicles because of their added benefits. The engines use the exhaust gas to create more power for vehicles. Turbocharged engines also require less installation space, reducing the overall weight of the vehicle which increases the performance even further.
Traction Control –
On low friction roads and terrains, there was a need for heavier vehicles to find alternate sources of grip. Traction Control – available in most SUVs in the UAE has proven to be that solution ensuring that vehicles gain suitable grip on challenging terrains like loose gravel, sand or snow. Traction Control engages when it senses that the vehicle is going to slip helping drivers make the most of friction available on the road surface.
Traction Control paired with Anti-Lock Braking Systems and Electronic Stability Control have significantly reduced fatal crash risks by up to 50%.
Hybrid Electric Vehicles –
A Hybrid Electric Vehicle combines a regular engine and an electric motor to leverage their strengths seamlessly to deliver a smooth and powerful drive which is beneficial for our planet in the longer run.
HEVs have multiple benefits, namely –
- They consume less fuel than conventional vehicles
- Carbon-based emissions are lower making HEVs more eco-friendly. They also help conserve non-renewable sources of energy
- Maintenance costs for HEVs are lower than that of conventional vehicles
- With the electric motor taking charge of the engine at regular intervals, more mileage is achieved on longer travels
iOS Carplay and Android Auto –
Applications were created to make life simpler. In that very sense, iOS Carplay and Android Auto, available on most vehicles nowadays, makes staying connected on the go easier. You can use all your smartphone features on the entertainment display from accessing your call logs, checking and replying to messages, playing your favorite sound tracks and navigating through new terrains. With Siri and the Google Assistant you won’t even have to switch your focus from the road ahead to get important tasks completed on the road.
One more great addition to this list is not too far away. Looking forward in the not so distant future a concept called Autonomous Driving, promises to be revolutionary in every sense.
